Labor, civic and social organizations held a press briefing and proposed an elderly care policy to the candidates of the upcoming June 13 local elections on the occasion of the Parents' Day in Korea on May 8 at Gwanghamun Square in central Seoul. They called on the local governments to take the initiative in strengthening the public nature of the area-based elderly care service.

The Joint Measures Committee to strengthen the public nature of the senior citizen's long-term care said that "the combination of high poverty rate of the elderly and insufficient senior citizen's care services and poor working conditions of care workers makes it hard for the elderly to have a decent life." In this regard, the Joint Committee insisted that "the local governments should guarantee the decent life of the elderly residents and realize the policy to guarantee the labor rights of care workers."
