The ruling liberal Democratic Party scored a landslide victory in the local elections and the parliamentary by-elections simultaneously held on June 13. The ruling Democratic Party claimed 14 of 17 metropolitan mayor and provincial governor positions, while the main opposition conservative Liberty Korea Party suffered a crushing defeat with only 2 wins secured in its strongholds of Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province. The ruling Democratic Party also swept to victory in the by-elections, grasping 11 of 12 parliamentary seats with only one seat allowed to the Liberty Korea Party. With the result of the by-elections, the parliamentary seats of the ruling Democratic Party now increased to 130 from 119, whereas the Liberty Korea Party was reduced to 113. In the election of the superintendents of education in 17 metropolitan cities and provinces, 14 superintendents elected were identified to be liberal, one more liberal superintendent compared to the previous local election result.
