The Jeon Tae-il Foundation on November 8 announced that the Migrant Trade Union(MTU) is selected as the winner of the 2018 Jeon Tae-il Award for its contribution to the protection and improvement of migrant workers' rights and working conditions in Korea as the sole labor union organized by the migrant workers working in Korea. The MTU was formed by the migrant workers working in the regions of Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi Province in 2005. The Supreme Court ruled on June 25, 2015 that "the undocumented foreign workers can form or join a labor union." The ruling took 10 years to legally recognize the migrant workers' union since the MTU was formed in 2005.
